The course constitutes an overview of the most relevant problems and aspects of the contemporary British culture and history. The course covers questions related to post-war United Kingdom (e.g. education, the class system, internal colonialism, multiculturalism) and their representations in selected texts of British culture. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with selected aspects of contemporary British history and its problems. The class has the form of practical instructions.
The topics include:
- Organizational class / introduction to British culture.
- Introduction to the British political system.
- The economy, politics and social policy of the United Kingdom; post-war British history in the context of economics, politics and social issues.
- British national identity; selected aspects of current issues in the United Kingdom: Scottish independence, Brexit.
- Regions of Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Ireland; devolution of the United Kingdom; decolonization.
- British cinema, television and radio.
- Revision.

Active participation and completion of a group project constitute a necessary condition of obtaining a passing grade. In case of unexplained absences, the grade will be lowered; in case of a large number of absences (particularly unexplained ones), or in case of persistent lack of preparation, the student may not be permitted to take the final test.
