(in Polish) Architecture of Nepal – history and technology in the light of dendrological research 14-OG-EN-AN
The aim of the course is to familiarize Students with the cultural heritage of Nepal. The course is interdisciplinary, it will allow the Students to learn about the art and the architecture of the Kathmandu Valley, and Himalayan Kingdom of Lo. Moreover, the Students will learn about the history, religions and cultural diversity of Nepal. The potential of historical wood as a source of information on both technological and historical issues will be presented. Students will learn about the methodology of wood identification and dendrochronology. They will be familiarized with the results of dendroarchaeological research conducted in Nepal.
Course program includes the following topics:
1. Nepal – geography and historical background
2. Culture and religion of Nepal
3. Ancient architecture of the Kathmandu Valley – introduction
4. Nevar Art – historical buildings in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan, typology
5. Nevar Art – woodcarving, motives
6. Identification of tree species – the introduction to wood anatomy
7. Nevar Art – wood species found in the historical buildings in the Kathmandu Valley
8. Buddhist architecture of the Kathmandu Valley
9. Himalaya and wood dependent culture of Mustang – geography, history and cultural background
10. Sacred Landscape of Himalaya – tangible and intangible heritage of Kingdom of Lo.
11. Archaeological research in the caves of Mustang
12. Traditional architecture of Upper Mustang
13. Dendrochronology and dendroarchaeology: basic principles and methodology
14. Dendrochronological research in Upper Mustang
15. Dendrochronological dating of timber in historical buildings in Upper Mustang – case studies
The topics will be illustrated with a literature examples and with the results of the lecturer's original research conducted in Nepal.

- Essay on wood in the architecture of Nepal (topic will be specified by the lecturer) – 60 pts
- activity during lectures, short (15 min) presentation prepared by Student – 35 pts
