Human Osteology 2600-OG-EN-HO

Osteology is the study of the skeleton. This course introduces the concepts and methods used in the analysis of human skeletal remains from forensic and archaeological contexts. The skills learned and practiced in this course provide a strong foundation for more advanced studies in comparative anatomy, bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, paleoanthropology, and paleopathology.
This course is designed to train students in the analysis and interpretation of human skeletal remains, primarily those derived from prehistoric archaeological contexts. Methods for human skeletal identification, metric and observational description of skeletal variation and the analysis and presentation of research results will be introduced. The student will be capable of preliminary estimations of age, sex, stature of individual specimens.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1) identify whole and fragmentary human skeletal elements;
2) distinguish between human and non-human bone;
3) estimate age, sex, ancestry, and stature of an individual;
4) estimate MNI (minimum number of individuals);
5) evaluate osteological applications in fields such as comparative anatomy, bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, paleoanthropology, and paleopathology.

Efekty uczenia się - wiedza

The student has the ability not only to identify human bones down to the anatomical placementand side, but also shows and names most of the anatomical features visible on bones and teeth, with the special attention to those used in bioarchaeological research (K_W02, K_W14). Will be able to perform basic osteological analysis, and to decide about the further proceedings (K_U02, K_U06).The student will understand the character and importance of human bones as the source for further archaeological interpretations (K_K03, K_K04).

Assessment criteria:
Passing Laboratory: the condition for obtaining a pass is attendance at all classes; written report covering the subject of the class or multiple choice test (60%), continuous assessment (current preparation of students for classes and studies (30%), active participation (10%).
Required threshold for a satisfactory grade - 55-60%, satisfactory plus - 61 -70%, good - 71-80%, good plus 81-90%, very good - 91-100%.
