In the winter semester, students learn about selected language phenomena from the area of English phonetics and phonology. In the summer semester, students will be provided with definitions of some basic concepts in prosody, morphology and types of word formation processes. The course makes it possible to achieve learning outcomes assumed for the subject.
Content distribution
− Introduction (learning outcomes, course contents, methods and evaluation criteria, diagnosis)
− Basic notions in phonetics and phonology, phonetic alphabet - revision and practice
− Theoretical aspects of processes of connected speech
− Theoretical aspects of rhythm and intonation
− Areas of difficulties in English pronunciation for Polish learners of English (theoretical aspects)
− Theoretical aspects of selected varieties of English
− Introduction to morphology; processes of word-formation in English

The final grade for the summer semester will be based on the following:
A. Continuous evaluation (40% of the final grade):
- Teacher’s observation based on answering teacher’s questions testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues described by the syllabus.
- A group project on selected varieties of English, presented as an online write-up and/or in-class multimedia presentation.

B. Final test (60% of the final grade): test containing open and closed questions, testing the students’ skills and knowledge of the issues in phonetics, phonology, morphology and word formation processes described by the syllabus (W1, W2, W3, W4, U1, U2, U3, U4)
Assessment criteria:
fail – 0-59%
satisfactory – 60-69 %
satisfactory plus – 70-75 %
good – 76-85 %
good plus – 86-90%
very good – 91-100
