2nd half of the 20th century in social memory 2500-OG-EN-SHTCSM
The aim of the course is to discuss the most important events in the social history of the second half of the 20th century in various countries, primarily taking into account the division of Europe by the Iron Curtain. Official history is dominated by great events related to politics and wars, while at the same time ordinary everyday life goes on, which does not function in official circulation, but is present in the social memory of individual societies and selected social groups. A comparison of events from official history and their image in social memory will be made based on cultural images and field research. The following detailed issues will be discussed:
- Social history in various theoretical perspectives,
- Halbwach’s idea of collective memory,
- Oral memory and its interdisciplinary connections,
- Znaniecki’s humanistic coefficient and the idea of social memory. Social memory as social fact in Durkheim’s understanding,
- Various ways to determine the most important historical events,
- People’s views on history,
- Nostalgia and its sociocultural dimensions,
- Social memory in popular culture,
- Nostalgic social media groups and magazines,
- Interview, survey, questionnaire and participant observation in social memory studies
- Examples of the images of the recent past in various countries
