Aesthetics 2400-OG-EN-AES
The contents of the course encompass the specificity of philosophical aesthetics, the question of the objectivity of aesthetic judgments, the evolution of the notion of aesthetics in the history of philosophy, the main aesthetic values such as beauty, sublime, grace, comedy, tragedy, and the notions and phenomena that occurred within philosophical aesthetics since the 18th century such as: the antinomy of taste, disinterestedness, material, formal, and expressive value of beauty. Another topic raised at the seminar is the history of the notion of the work of art and chosen contemporary approaches to it.
The course will be based on classical conceptions and theories of modern and contemporary aesthetics by Batteux, Shaftesbury, Burke, Hume, Kant, Schiller, Scheler, Gadamer, Benjamin, Ortega y Gasset, Santayana, Heidegger.
