Lectures
Despite many ethical controversies, animals, mainly laboratory ones, play an important role in the development of biomedical sciences. In accordance with applicable law (Act of January 15, 2015 on the protection of animals used for scientific or educational purposes, Journal of Laws 2015, item 266), experiments using animals are carried out only with the consent of the Ethical Committee for Animal Experiments. Animals must be kept in conditions appropriate to their species, and the research methods used must eliminate or minimize pain, suffering and prolonged stress.
Students will be familiarized with the basics of biology (anatomy, physiology, behavior) of selected species of laboratory and experimental animals, principles of breeding and husbandry, preparation for the procedure, and recognizing species-specific signs of pain, distress and suffering; they learn the rules of work in an animal facility.

The workload balance of a student: 1. Hours conducted with the participation of instructors: Participation in lectures: 15 hours The workload related to classes requiring the direct participation of academic teachers is 15 hours, which corresponds to 0.6 ECTS points 2. The time devoted to self-study of a student course necessary to successfully complete the course, required revision of the material and writing passing test: 9+1=10 hours The total student workload related to preparing to participate in the assessment process is 10 hours, which corresponds to 0.4 ECTS points The total student workload related to the course is 25 hours, which corresponds to 1 ECTS point.

W1: Student defines basic concepts in the field of breeding and biology of laboratory and experimental animals; W2: Students explains the principles of conducting experiments on animals, including preclinical tests based on legal standards in force in Poland, taking into account animal protection and the use of alternative methods W3:Students knows the basics of organizing an animal facility W4:Student classifies the severity of procedures; W5: Student knows how to inject substances tested on animals; W6: Student is aware of ethical problems arising when conducting experiments on animals;

U1: Student can recognize basic animal behavior and assess animal welfare parameters; U2: Student can plan a simple experiment using experimental animals in accordance with applicable legal standards and draw appropriate conclusions from it; U3: Student can assess the advantages and disadvantages of conducting animal tests and indicate the possibility of replacing them with alternative methods;

Kryteria oceniania

Lecture: The basis for passing the course is attendance at lectures and positive completion of a test on the knowledge acquired during lectures. The test is presented in the form of an electronic, interactive presentation on the Moodle platform

Test: pass ≥ 60% (W1-W6, U1-U3)
Extended observation (0-10 points, > 50%): K1-K2
The points obtained are converted into grades according to the following scale:
