Contemporary cancer therapy is a combination therapy in which surgery and radiation are used and chemotherapy.
The course on the subject: clinical oncology aims to familiarize students with selected issues in the field of these three clinical fields, indicate the principles of diagnostic procedures in oncology, primary and secondary prevention programs, combined treatment and monitoring of patients after treatment.
The course aims to:
- familiarizing the student with information on biology, immunology and cancer genetics
- familiarizing the student with the basic information on the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients
- presenting the latest trends in the development of diagnostics and treatment of cancer
- presentation of the principles of interdisciplinary cooperation
in oncological treatment and its benefits.
The oncology course is carried out with the help of lectures, seminars and exercises:
The lecture aims to acquire and consolidate knowledge in the field of biology, immunology and genetics of cancer, diagnostics and treatment of cancer patients, the latest trends in the development of diagnostics and treatment of cancer and the principles of interdisciplinary cooperation in oncological treatment and its benefits.
The seminars are devoted to the preparation and summary of knowledge acquired during practical classes and lectures.
Classes are devoted to acquiring practical skills in the field of:
- basics and diagnostic imaging of neoplastic changes
- practical assessment of the stage of completion on the basis of clinical and ancillary tests
- basic principles of radiotherapy and systemic treatment
- emergencies in oncology and treatment principles
- treatment of pain and complications in cancer patients
- cancer detection based on phantom examination
in selected disease entities: testis, breast, prostate gland, reproductive organ
- skills: palpation of the breast, palpation of the lymph nodes, gynecological examination, visual assessment of skin pigmentation changes

- Treatment planning in external beam radiotherapy

2. Physical and biological basics of the interaction of ionizing radiation with matter. Fundamentals of radiobiology

- participation in planning of radiotherapy and chemotherapy
- participation in the qualification of an oncological patient for interdisciplinary treatment

- actively becoming acquainted with cancer changes in the radiological image and differentiating cancer changes based on them
- interpretation of the histopathological result and influence on therapeutic decisions

Wymagania wstępne
A student starting education in the subject of clinical oncology should have knowledge of cancer biology, including tumorigenesis mechanisms, knowledge of laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging.
A student who starts studying "Clinical Oncology" should have completed the fourth year. He should undergo internal training in radiation protection (Radiotherapy Department).
