The classes of thoracic surgery in Respiratory Diseases Module at the Faculty of Medicine, Nicholaus Copernicus University are delivered in the form of seminars and tutorials.
The subjects of the seminars are as follows:
1.Thoracic trauma.
2. Suppurative thoracic diseases
3. Congenital thoracic wall deformities.
4. Pneumothorax & hydrothorax.
5. Carcinoma of the lung.
6. Tumours of the mediastinum.
7. Palliative thoracic surgery.
Tutorials take place in the Department of Thoracic Surgery and Tumours, Centre of Oncology, Bydgoszcz
During practical excercises students participate actively in all forms of work done by a thoracic surgeon in the department.
1.Operating theatre
Students can observe surgical procedures, ask questions and receive detailed explanations. There is no possibility to assist a surgeon.
2.Outpatient clinic
Students are acquainted with an ambulatory form of medical care (physical examination, qualification for treatment, follow-up in lung, pleural and mediastinal malignancies).
3.Bronchoscopic room
Students can observe a preparation for bronchoscopy and the technique of this endoscopic examination. They are also familiarize with same modern bronchoscopic methods such as autofluorescence bronchoscopy (AFI) or a transbronchial needle aspiration biopsy under ultrasound guidance.
4.Interdisciplinary meeting
Students can take part in a multidisciplinary meeting, where patients are qualified for a treatment for thoracic malignancies.
All practical subjects mentioned above are realized during three tutorials.
Całkowity nakład pracy studenta
Study hours involving teacher participation:
- tutorials – 18 hours,
- seminars – 12 hours;
Study hours involving individual student work:
- reading literature – 10 hours,
- preparation for examination – 10 hours;
Total: 50 hours ( 2 ECTS)
Efekty uczenia się - wiedza
Student:
W1: can define, diagnose and institute an efficient treatment for pneumothorax (tension, open and closed pneumothorax). (F.W1, F.W17)
W2: knows diagnostic rules and management of cardiac and pulmonary contusion, oesophageal perforation and diaphragmatic rupture, flail chest and cardiac tamponade. (F.W1, F.W17)
W3: can understand the mechanism of subcutaneous emphysema after thoracic trauma and knows how to treat it. (F.W1)
W4: knows pathogenesis of lung abscess and pleural empyema, mediastinitis, bronchiectasis and pulmonary mycosis and their management. (F.W1)
W5: knows basic surgical procedures used in thoracic surgery (videothoracoscopy, mediastinoscopy, mediastinotomy, thoracotomy, sternotomy etc.) (F.W1)
W6: is acquainted with typical chest deformities: funnel and pigeon chest.(F.W1)
Student:
W7 is familiar with the risk factors for lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, knows how to diagnose and treat these malignancies. (F.W1)
W8: knows diagnostic management of solitary pulmonary nodule and the way how to proceed with it dependently on its morphological features and a patient’s history. (F.W11)
W9: is familiar with terms such as mediastinum, mediastinal tumors and pseudotumors and mediastinitis. Knows when a microscopic verification of a tumor and surgical treatment is necessary (F.W7)
W10: knows basic surgical procedures used in thoracic surgery (videothoracoscopy, mediastinoscopy, mediastinotomy, thoracotomy, sternotomy etc.) and their complications (F.W1)
W11: has knowledge about recurrent pleural effusion and its management.(F.W1)
W12: can present the possibilities of a palliative restoration of airways patency in primary and secondary pulmonary malignancies(F.W1)
Efekty uczenia się - umiejętności
Student:
U1:is able to diagnose pneumothorax and pleural effusion in clinical examination do a chest tube drainage in a patient with pneumothorax or pleural effusion (E.U5, E.U9)
U2: has the ability to perform thoracocentesis (E.U14)
U3: has basic knowledge for the assessment of a chest x-ray, CT and PET/CT scans. (A.U4, A.U7)
U4: is able to check the proper functioning of a pleural drainage. (E.U30)

Student:
K1: can communicate with a patient to obtain necessary information (K_K03).
K2: can cooperate with other physicians and nurses to offer a patient the best management possible. (K_K09)
K3: participates in multidisciplinary meetings and be able to justify the own method of management.(K_K07)
