„Basics of Parasitology Diagnostics” focuses on parasites of medical importance that cause human morbidity and mortality throughout the world. It discusses the fundamental mechanisms of host-parasite relationships, diagnostics, pathogenesis, epidemiology and control strategies for parasitic diseases.
During tutorials selected parasitic diseases are discussed in detail in the aspect of current epidemiological threats. Contemporary problems of selected tropical diseases will be presented, including malaria as a significant threat to public health.
Students also learn the techniques used in the laboratory diagnostics of parasitic diseases, as well as methods applicable in research in the field of parasitology. During the course, students make direct and permanent microscopic slides (fixation and staining).
During „Basics of Parasitology Diagnostics” on the example of selected clinical cases (using a multimedia program), students perform differential diagnosis of important parasitoses based on knowledge acquired during the obligatory course of "Parasitology".
Students individually identify the parasites present in the samples from patients with mixed infestations. They also learn about the use of modern equipment used in parasitological diagnostics, including digital image analysis and processing, as well as archiving of diagnostic test results with use of automatic system for parasitological research.
