Caravaggio and his Bible inspired paintings 1500-OG-EN-CAR
Art is to provoke and inspire. But artists themselves also need inspiration. For many centuries the Bible was a prominent source of inspiration for many artists. Caravaggio was one of them, even though he lived a life which was far from religious standards. The works of art he left, especially those inspired by biblical events and figures, are worth a thorough study. Within this class the student will be offered some insight on the style that Caravaggio represented. However, a special emphasis will be put on bringing to light – nomen omen – the biblical echoes present in his paintings as well as biblical symbolism they contain.
The following subjects will be dealt with during subsequent classes:
1. The Bible and its interpretation
2. The life of Caravaggio and the artistic challenges of the epoque
3. “David and Goliath”
4. St. John the Baptist – life and death
5-6. Christ – betrayal, death and resurrection
7. The Evangelists and Disciples
