Biedermeier Art: Between Classicism, Romanticism, and Historicism 14-OG-EN-BA-Z
The lecture focuses on different interpretations and definitions of Biedermeier art (ca. 1815-1848) that have been formulated in scholarly and popular literature from the second half of nineteenth century to the present day. Changes in interpretation and differing, sometimes contradictory, understandings of this German term are discussed in the context of the Biedermeier epoch. Because a significant number of interpretations are based on Biedermeier’s relationships to various simultaneous artistic phenomenathe lecture also addresses this issue within the scope of stylistic changes that occurred in European visual arts from the second half of eighteenth century to the end of nineteenth century.
The structure of the lecture is problem-based:
1. Introduction to the Biedermeier epoch and the genesis of the term.
2. The meaning of Biedermeier in Austrian and German historiography.
3. Biedermeier as an aristocratic or bourgeois phenomenon.
4. A holistic view of Biedermeier art: types of artistic activity, geographic scope, and timeframe.
5. Biedermeier in painting, drawing and graphic arts and its relationship to Realism, Idealism and Romanticism.
6. Biedermeier furniture – simplified Classicism? Its relationship to Historicism.
7. Biedermeier in various forms of applied arts – between Classicism and Historicism.
8. Biedermeier architecture?
9. The reception of Biedermeier art in Polish lands in a historical and sociopolitical context.
10. Biedermeier versus Romanticism in Polish lands.
