Moot Court Competitions Seminar - Masterclass 1

This course is aimed as a continuation of a course from the summer semester „Moot Court Competitions Seminar - Introduction”.
For the purpose of the course teams will be created that will work on a selected moot case. During this course students will further develop writing and advocacy skills, focusing on one specific case.
1/ Research skills - where to find and how to analyze reference materials - 2 h
2/ Selected moot case analysis - building on argumentative strategy and theoretical background - 3 h
3/ Developing written submissions/memorials - 15 h

Contact hours with teacher:
1/ contact hours (laboratory) - 20 h in winter semester
Self-study hours:
1/ analysis of relevant judgments, legislation and other documents - 10 h;
2/ preparation of written submissions for a selected competition - 40 h;
3/ preparation for oral pleadings for a selected competition - 20 h
Altogether: 90 hrs (3 ECTS)

W1 - student has a thorough understanding of how to construct a logical and compelling legal argument;
W2 - student obtains knowledge concerning the most relevant international law standards applicable to particular case studies;
W3 - student is familiar with English language terminology concerning the topic;
W4 - student acquires knowledge concerning the relevant decisions and practice of selected international arbitration bodies;
W5 - student is familiar with the relevant judgments of the International Court of Justice, judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (and other international human rights protection bodies),

U1 - student is able to identify, analyze and interpret relevant international law provisions;
U2 - student can critically approach both the normative standards and the case-law;
U3 - student is able to present written and oral submissions (improved litigation skills)
U4 - student can build a legal argument and support it with relevant sources;
U5 - student is able to research the subject matter independently

K1, K2, U3 - active participation during the lectures (discussions, moot court, group work)

Assessment criteria based on the number of points awarded for 1) active participation in discussions, 2) written and 3) oral tasks:
fail- 0-1 pts
satisfactory- 2-5 pts
satisfactory plus- 6-9 pts
good – 10-13 pts
good plus- 14-17 pts
very good- 18-21 pts
Literatura
The lecturer will advise on the recommended literature and materials during the course. Materials will be accessible on the Moodle platform or via Teams.
