Townscape of ancient Mediterranean. From from the Greek polis to the cosmopolitan Roman city 1201-OG-EN-TAM
In this course, students will be introduced to the process of ancient city formation. Issues including the terminology of the process of establishing Greek cities will be presented. The formation of urban centres in Italy and the Roman provinces will be presented. Environmental (convenience of land for cultivation, natural resources) or geographical (ease of communication by sea or land) factors influencing the dynamic development of Greek cities will be analysed. The interrelationship between communication conditions (navigational conditions) and the convenience of the area for the construction of a settlement or city on a given stretch of the Mediterranean and Black Sea coasts will be presented. The system of relationships between a city and its economic hinterland will be presented in detail. The different ways in which the natural resources of the environment (grain, grapes, olives as well as fishing and cattle breeding) were used to build the economic potential of the major centres of antiquity will be presented. The course will present methods for assessing the economic potential of an area and the importance of this potential for the political development of a centre. The exploitation and use of natural resources such as copper, tin, iron, silver and marble will also be examined. In this context, the process of the development of Greek settlements in areas of particular importance due to their natural resources will be analysed.
