Seafaring and maritime interaction in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age 1201-OG-EN-SMBAIA

Target: students will know about the main changes in maritime contacts that took place from beginning of the Bronze Age until the Iron Age. Students will know that these contacts were associated with development of complex system of long-distance exchange of bronzes and other prestige objects. He/she will study the Bronze Age and the Iron Age means of water transportation. Topics: maritime roots of the Bronze Age cultures, interaction and exchange, seafaring in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

Contact hours with teacher: – participation in discussion seminar – 15 hrs; – consultations – 10 hrs. Self-study hours: – preparation for discussion seminar – 15 hrs; – writing essay – 20 hrs; – reading literature – 10 hrs; – preparation for test – 15 hrs. Altogether: 85 hrs (3 ECTS)

Student: – W1: has basic/advanced knowledge of maritime activity in prehistory; – W2: knows/possesses knowledge of archaeological evidence for seafaring in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age; – W3: is familiar with the most important archaeological sites for reconstruction of seafaring and maritime contacts.

Student: – U1: is able to analyse maritime activities in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age; – U2: can analyse archaeological evidence important for reconstruction prehistoric seafaring and maritime contacts.

Student: – K1: is aware of responsibility for protection of underwater heritage; – K2: understands the need for European cooperation; – K3: is sensitive for social cooperation; – K4: identifies/ accepts/ recognizes value of heritage.

Metody dydaktyczne

Expository teaching methods: – discussion seminar assisted with multimedia presentations; introduction to each topic by a short lecture.

Assessment methods:

Assessment criteria:
Activity (25%); essay (50%), test (25%): fail (2) – 0 pts (49%), satisfactory (3) – 50 pts (50%), satisfactory plus (3,5) – 60 pts (60%), good (4) – 75 pts (75%), good plus (4,5) – 85 pts (85%), very good (5) – 90–100 pts (90%).
