Plants as a tool to explore different aspects of human life 1201-OG-EN-PAAT
The issues presented in the lectures will include the most relevant data on plant traces as a valuable source of information about the past. Botanical remains appear in the broader context of evidence used in various fields of life and knowledge, both in criminal cases and in gaining insight into cultural transformations. The lecture will introduce the audience to a broad spectrum of issues in which botanical analyses (palynological and macroscopic plant remains) provide important proof in recognising the past. Among other topics, the lecture will present: palynological analysis as a voice in the debate on the origin of the Turin Shroud; the mysterious history of Easter Island and the moai; the mysteries recorded in the “ice man” (Ötzi); botanical analysis as a tool in the recognition of crimes; plants used in funerary rites; symbolic and magical significance of plants; plant imagery in paintings and architectural details – a reflection of the landscape or the author's imagination; mead and natural honey and their traces discovered in vessels found at archaeological sites.
