Culture of Toruń in the light of archaeological research. Notes on the house, kitchen, bathouse and other secret places in the times of Nicolaus Copernicus (15-16th c.) 1201-OG-EN-COT

At the beginning students learn about the history of Toruń – Hanseatic city in Pomerania (northern Poland). Then, they will learn about the life of the famous astronomer – Nicolaus Copernicus, who was born and taught in Toruń, near the bank of the Vistula river. They can see many monuments in Toruń, e.g.: the home of the Nicolaus Copernicus family, teutonic castle in Toruń, former hospital (Szpitalna Street 4), store houses by the Vistula River, and gothic churches of Toruń. Students can see portrait of Nicolaus Copernicus (16th century) etc. Students will learn about the past of Toruń in many of finds from Toruń and from the other archaeological sites, near Toruń. These finds are protected in: Regional Museum in Toruń (Muzeum Okręgowe w Toruniu) and in the Institute of Archaeology of the Nicolaus Copernicus University. During the lecture students can see and learn about the following places and things used in the city between the 15th and 16th century. These are, for example: elements of interior equipment (reconstruction of glass window, stone washing basin, tiled stove, floor tiles, maiolica stove tiles, half-figure stove tiles, glazed floor tiles etc.); remarks about hygiene, baths and secret places (hypocaustum heating system in the guest house, bath in a wooden tub, medical cups, bowls, jars, pots and cups used in the baths, cupping procedure inside the bath, combs, outhouse and chamber pots); utensils used in the kitchen and at the table (different kitchen pots for cooking and stewing; ceramic colanders, ceramic jars, caps, bowls, plates, mugs and glassware used at the table; apothecary utensils and stoneware jags and one small jar etc.); accessories used for entertainment (cubic dices, pyramid shaped pawn, marbles, wooden flute and playful vessels-glass and ceramic); mints and coins used in Toruń between 15th and 16th century (bracteats, denars) and leather pouch and ceramic money box); metal and glass adornments and clothing accessories; metal stylus and wax tablets, and metal scissors etc.

Całkowity nakład pracy studenta

(po angielsku) Contact hours with teacher: – participation in discussion seminar – 15 hrs; – consultations – 5 hrs. Self-study hours: – preparation for discussion seminar – 25 hrs; – reading literature – 15 hrs; – preparation for test – 25 hrs. Altogether: 85 hrs (3 ECTS)

(po angielsku) Student: – W1: has basic knowledge of medieval culture in the Hansetic League, specially in Torun, above of all between 15th and 16th century; – W2: possesses knowledge on material culture citizens of Torun during 15th and 16th century; – W3: The subject- specific learning outcome; Snapshops of life in Toruń in the times of Nicolaus Copernicus ( 15th–16th c.); – W4: knowledge on material and spiritual culture citizens of Polish towns and convents and citizens of towns being members of Hanseatic League. The contents of lectures is beneficial for archaeologists, historians, regional study researchers, cultural anthropologists, specialists of the Church and Monastery history etc.

(po angielsku) Student: – U1: recognition of archaeological data and historical records for reconstruction of every day life in the city, in the temenent houses, inside the kitchen, bath, secret places; – U2: the ability to distinguish e.g. kitchen utensils from tableware, products from the 15th century from the 16th century, coins from tokens etc.; – U3: recognizing old skills based on archaeological artifacts – writing, building, spinning.

Assessment criteria:
test: fail – less 50 pts; satisfactory (3) – 50–59 pts (50–59%); satisfactory plus (3,5) – 60–69 pts (60–69%); good (4) – 70–79 pts (70–79%); good plus (4,5) – 80–89 pts (80–89%); very good (5) – 90–100 pts (90–100%).
