Scientific writing and publishing 7404-SD-Ch-SWP

Systematic presentation of the contents of a scientific manuscript.
Detailed discussion of the theme, authors, affiliations, abstract, introduction, experimental section, results and discussion, conclusions, acknowledgements and references, of the manuscript to be prepared and evaluated as final exam.

Total student workload

Contact hours with teacher - participation in lectures - 15 hrs - consultation - 5 hrs Self-study hours - writing a manuscript on the topic of the Master or PhD thesis - 20 hrs - reading literature - 10 hrs Altogether: 50 hrs (2 ECTS)

PhD students will have the ability to select between what is important and what is less important when it comes to the writing of a scientific manuscript

PhD students will have the skills to write a manuscript that can be submitted to a journal with a high impact factor

Learning outcomes - social competencies

PhD students will have the competence to judge the importance of the need to publish scientific results even if they may not be very interesting at the present time. If scientific results are not communicated, no one will be aware of their existence! This happens to so many theses from all over the world that are written in a foreign language that no one can read and from which no papers have been published.

Prerequisites

Fundamental knowledge of the area in which a PhD thesis is presently being worked on. Ability to communicate in English. Ability to formulate a scientific text in English.

Assessment criteria

Assessment method:
Evaluation will be performed on the basis of the manuscript prepared by the student at the end of the course.
The student will be asked to present a 15 min seminar on the basis of the written manuscript.

Assessment criteria:
fail: 0-49%; satisfactory: 50-60%; satisfactory plus: 61-65%; good: 66-75%;
good plus: 76-80%; very good: 81-100%
