Lectures - prof. dr hab. Wiesław Deptuła:
Introduction to immunology, basic immunological concepts, microbiome and the immune system of mammals. Structure and ontogenesis of the immune system, blood and lymph vessels, central and peripheral lymphatic organs in mammals, including farm, laboratory and companion animals. Immune system cells including platelets in mammals and animals as above. Anatomical and physiological barriers, mechanisms of non-specific and specific cellular and humoral immunity in mammals and animals as above. Antigen pathway in the immune system, allergic reactions, immune diseases in mammals, and selected data from clinical veterinary immunology.

Organization of laboratory classes, laboratory regulations, health and safety regulations, introduction to immunology, among others organs of the immune system, functions, types of immunity etc.
Cells of the immune system and the functions of cells involved in non-specific immunity - the phagocytosis process and the killing ability of these cells, e.g. NBT, LZM, MPO, etc.
Assessment of specific cellular and humoral immunity - T and B lymphocytes and their products (cytometry, detection of antibodies and immune complexes). Enzyme immunoassays, their types, immunoprecipitation, Western blotting, immunodetection, immunocytochemical markers.

Hours carried out with the participation of teachers (60 hours- 2,4 ECTS) -30 hours lectures -30 hours laboratory classes (exercises) Time devoted to individual student work (40 hours - 1,6 ECTS) - preparation for assignments 33 hours - own work on studies - 7 hours Total: 100 hours

W1 - knows and can discuss the stages of the diagnostic procedure; K_W15 W2 - lists the structure of the immune system, its ontogenesis and describes non-specific cellular and humoral defense mechanisms as well as immunity and anti-infective resistance in animals (mammals), K_W04, W3 - knows and can discuss the stages of the immune response and the principles of non-specific and specific prophylaxis in animals (mammals); K_W24 W4 - lists and describes diseases with an immune basis, including autoimmune diseases in animals (mammals) K_W24

U1 - is able to choose the appropriate methods to determine non-specific and specific cellular and humoral immunity in terms of the activity and number of selected indicators of these immunities as an element of the assessment of the immune status, mainly anti-infective in animals (mammals). , K_U04

K1 - feels the need to constantly update knowledge; K_K08 K2 - understands the need to organize interpersonal cooperation in the laboratory; K_K09 K3 - understands the need to maintain safety rules when working with biological material. K_K01

Prerequisites

The course is offered in the 5th semester (3rd year of study). A passing grade in the following subjects is required: Anatomy I (semester I), Anatomy II (semester II), Physiology I (semester III), Physiology II (semester IV), Microbiology I (semester II), and Microbiology II (semester III).

Assessment criteria

Assessment methods:

Written examination based on the material presented during lectures; an oral examination may be arranged if agreed before the regular exam session.

Completion of laboratory classes through partial assessments (including practical tasks) and a final written test. Attendance at laboratory classes is mandatory.

Grading criteria (percentage of the maximum score):

Satisfactory: 60–70%
Satisfactory plus: 71–80%
Good: 81–87%
Good plus: 88–94%
Very good: above 94%

Students who do not achieve a passing grade in the assessment or examination are entitled to one resit. The same grading criteria and scoring rules apply during the resit period.
