The Climate of cities 2800-OG-EN-TCOC

Objective of the course: Presentation in a comprehensive and synthetic way of the current state of knowledge in the field of climate of cities.
Course content: Motivation to study urban climates. Main factors controlling urban climate. Radiation and energy balance. Air temperature and Urban Heat Island. Water in the city. Spatio-temporal variability of other meteorological elements in urban areas. Bioclimatic and aerosanitary aspects of life in the city. Geographical controls (eg. floods, heatwaves) and local climate zones. Pollution in urban areas. Practical improvement of the local climate of urbanized areas. Urban adaptation to climate change. Climate of Toruń and Warsaw as an example (data, methods, main outcomes). Cities worldwide and their climate.

Total student workload

Hours spent with teachers (20 hrs): - participation in lectures - 15 - consultations with an academic teacher - 5 Time spent on individual student work (25 hrs): - reading literature - 10 - preparation for the exam - 15 Total: 45 hrs (2 ECTS points)

Learning outcomes - knowledge

Student knows and understands the basic factors that shape the climate of urbanized and industrialized areas. Describes the regularities of the distribution of selected elements of the city's climate. Knows the basic phenomena and processes occurring in the mutual relations between the atmospheric environment-city-human.

Learning outcomes - skills

Student uses methods of developing individual elements of the city climate. Analyzes cause-and-effect relationships occurring in the atmosphere-active surface relations. Critically evaluates the role of humans in modifying the climate of urbanized areas.

Learning outcomes - social competencies

Student understands the need to update his knowledge in the field of climate change and its causes. Can independently or in a team credibly and reliably assess the consequences of climate change for city and humans, providing rational solutions. Is able to properly define priorities for the implementation of a task defined by himself or others.

Assessment criteria

Lectures: written exam in the form of a test to be completed, required grade for a satisfactory grade: 51-60%, 61-70% - satisfactory plus, 71-80% - good, 81-90% - good plus, 91-100% - very good.
