Processes that shape the karst landscape – introduction to geology and environmental factors that control karst development. Overview of the rock types that are subjected to karstification. Distribution of the most important karst areas in Poland and the world.
Presentation of surface and underground karst forms. Introduction of various surface karst forms (e.g. polje, karst spring and ponor, karrens, karst monadnocks - fengcong, fenglin, cone karst and tower karst). Introduction of subsurface karst forms. Speleogenesis and types of caves. Vadose and phreatic zone. Agents behind the formation and diversity of speleothems. Overview of the extraordinary karst forms.
Man and Karst – cultural and natural heritage associated with karst areas. The history of cave inhabitation. The most important archaeological sites related to the caves. Recent utilisation of the caves. Scientific, cultural and recreational values of karst regions. Accessibility of karst areas to tourists and their sustainable management.
Presentations on the development and tourism potential of selected karst sites. Analysis of tourism development potential in a karst area. Valorisation of surface and underground karst objects.
