Genetics 2600-S1-CM-GEN
LECTURE: Branches of genetics. Founders of genetics. Definition of a gene. Levels of regulation of gene activity. Initiation and termination of transcription in prokaryotes. Operons and methods of their regulation. Regulons. Complexity of regulation of gene activity in eukaryotes. Mitochondrial genome. Mendel's laws, apparent and real deviations from Mendelian relations. Types of gene cooperation. Inheritance of quantitative traits. Heritability. Allelicity tests. Recombination and gene mapping. Mutations and their effects, including cancer. Genetic determination of sex. Non-Mendelian inheritance: extrachromosomal inheritance, maternal effect, epigenetic changes. Population genetics - Hardy-Weinberg law, factors disturbing population equilibrium. Human genetics with the basics of molecular diagnostics.
EXERCISES: Model organisms, basic genetic concepts. Transformation of bacteria by heat shock. Mendel's laws. Gene cooperation. Inheritance of sex-linked traits in humans. Gene mapping by linkage analysis. Human genetics - identification of human sex by PCR. Genetic determinants of human diseases - counseling and prevention.
