The lecture introduces into basic concepts of evolutionary biology and informs about the history of life on earth.
This information includes
1) Historical aspects of evolutionary biology
2) History of life on earth
3) Evolutionary mechanisms
4) The species concept
5) Types of speciation
6) Adaptive strategies
7) Important evolutionary laws
8) Evolution of man

Total student workload

Contact hours with teacher: - participation in lectures - 15 hrs - consultations- 5 hrs Self-study hours: - preparation for lectures - 5 hrs - reading literature- 5 hrs Altogether: 30 hrs (1 ECTS)

Learning outcomes - knowledge

W1: increases knowledge on the diversity of life on earth W2: possesses basic knowledge on phylogeny, including the evolution of man W2: is familiar with basic models of evolutionary changes

U1: is able to apply evolutionary thinking in other fields of knowledge U2: has the ability to understanding and to apply models of evolutionary change

Learning outcomes - social competencies

K1: identifies major advantages of evolutionary thinking K2: is aware of the importance of increasing our understanding on the history of life on earth K3: understands the need to save biodiversity in the light of anthropogenic threats.
