Methodology and philosophy of nature 2600-MFBBIOT-2-S2
We discuss the philosophy of biology and the sources of causal thinking in the biological sciences particularly featuring the philosophical dimensions of Darwin's evolutionary biology. We discuss cognitive strategies in biological research: reductionism vs. anti-reductionism in biological research, the dispute over the laws of science in biology, analysis of the basic categories used in biology: species, individuals, fundamentals of planning experiments in the biological sciences: mechanisms of constructing theories on the basis of biological sciences, strategies for verifying hypotheses in biological research, the assessment of the significance and cognitive value of so-called model organisms. Social and political implications of discoveries made on the basis of biological sciences. We also discuss recent practices in scientific studies, particularly predatory journals and scientific evaluation.
