4. A brief history of Italian language and its contemporary character: the concept of standard, neo-standard, sub-standard, language variants, dialects, bilingualism in Italy, multilingualism;
5. The activity of the Accademia della Crusca and the problem of the language standard in Italy;
6. Basic concepts of linguistic communication: functions of language, types of speech acts, linguistic competence versus communicative competence, notions of utterance, text and discourse;
7. Elements of discourse: Italian discourse in the mass media (Italiano trasmesso);
8. Italian lexicology and lexicography: Italian vocabulary, linguistic borrowings, vocabulary;
9. Semantics: the semantic field of words, lexical semantics, meaning relations between words (synonyms, antonyms, hyperonyms, ecc.);
10. Italian dialects

Total student workload
For the course completion students obtain 2 ECTS credits (60 hours) in the following arrangement:
1) Hours with the direct participation of the academic teacher (30 hours) and individual consultations (10 hours) (1 ECTS);
2) Hours spent without the participation of the academic teacher
- preparing for classes, reading the literature, doing the work - 20 hours (1 ECTS).

- Final assessment - 50%.
In the case of written assignments and the final test, the following scoring criteria are adopted depending on the correctness of the work, the number of errors:
- more than 90% - 5
- 85%-89% - 4+
- 80%-84% - 4
- 70%-79% - 3+
- 60%-69% - 3
