History of translation (The Rosetta Stone, King Alfred, John Wycliffe, John Purvey, the Protestant Reformation - Luther, Erasmus and Müntzer, William Tyndale, Etienne Dolet, John Dryden, Lord Woodhouselee, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Yan Fu, Summer Institute of Linguistics , Ezra Pound, Walter Benjamin, Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig)

10. Contemporary theories of translation (Jakobson, Levy, Nida, Catford, George Steiner and the hermeneutic movement, the cultural turning point, the theory of Skopos, the theory of relevance, Toury and the descriptive study, domestication and estrangement of Venuti).

Learning outcomes - knowledge

K_W01: has a basic knowledge of the language / languages of a given cultural area. K_W10: knows the basic principles of translation. K_W13: has basic knowledge of selected linguistic issues in terms of comparative, contrastive and intercultural aspects.

Learning outcomes - skills

K_U04: can translate from Polish into the language / languages of a given area. K_U21: can recognize different registers and varieties of language / languages of a given cultural area.

Learning outcomes - social competencies

K_K01: is aware of the level of his/her knowledge and skills, understands the need for continuous training and development. K_K08: thanks to linguistic competence, he/she is prepared to move efficiently in a given cultural area.

Prerequisites

The student knows the basic principles of translation and has a basic knowledge of selected linguistic issues in the comparative, contrastive and intercultural aspect. The student has a basic knowledge of the language / languages of the cultural area - Italian or Spanish.

Assessment criteria

Demonstration, analytical and communication method aimed at introducing the student to new strategies in the field of "art" of translation from Italian and Spanish into Polish - (K_W01, K-W10, K_W13). Participation in classes (K_K01, K_K08) and passing the final test in writing to check the acquired competences during lectures - (K_U04, K_U21). The grading scale is the following: 0-59% of the maximum number of points - failed, 60-68% - 3,0, 69-74% - 3,5, 75-82% - 4,0, 83-89% - 4,5, 90-100% - 5,0.
