The linguistics seminar in the first semester aims to:
prepare the student for independent research on the French language and for comparative studies between French and Polish;
broaden knowledge of theories and methodologies used in linguistics, and emphasize the need to use an appropriate conceptual apparatus for the field;
develop skills in sourcing scholarly literature and making appropriate selections from existing sources;
build the ability to understand a specific type of discourse (academic/scientific discourse);
provide knowledge of the criteria for selecting linguistic material, i.e., choosing a corpus (spoken or written) appropriate to the research objectives;
cultivate the ability to define one’s own research corpus (representative of the phenomenon under analysis) on the basis of selected readings;
develop skills of analysis and synthesis;
review the formal requirements used in academic writing;
demonstrate practical applications of linguistic research;
develop skills in group communication and collaboration with the supervisor.

Les cours de séminaire de linguistique au premier semestre ont pour objectif : de préparer l’étudiant à la recherche scientifique autonome sur la langue française ainsi qu’aux études comparatives entre le français et le polonais ; d’enrichir les connaissances sur les théories et méthodologies utilisées en linguistique, et de souligner la nécessité d’employer un appareil conceptuel adapté à la discipline ; de développer les compétences d’acquisition de la littérature scientifique et de sélection adéquate des sources existantes ; de développer la capacité de compréhension d’un type de discours spécifique (le discours scientifique) ; de transmettre des connaissances sur les critères de sélection du matériau linguistique, c’est-à-dire le choix d’un corpus (oral ou écrit) adapté aux objectifs de la recherche ; de former les étudiants à définir leur propre corpus de recherche (représentatif du phénomène analysé) à partir de lectures choisies ; de développer les compétences d’analyse et de synthèse ; de rappeler les exigences formelles en vigueur dans les travaux scientifiques ; de montrer les applications pratiques des recherches en linguistique ; de développer les compétences de communication au sein du groupe et la collaboration avec le directeur de mémoire. |

Assessment criteria
Methods for assessing the achievement of the intended learning outcomes
Continuous (formative) assessment:
Discussion during seminar sessions.
In-class oral presentation aimed at clarifying uncertainties (the presentation has a formative function for the other students).
In-class oral discussion of the features of scientific discourse.
Reading an article on corpus linguistics and checking comprehension in class.
Individual in-class presentations and discussion.
In-class work; ongoing monitoring of exercises.
Presentation of various types of information, references, and acceptable formats (main title; chapter and subchapter titles; author; bibliographic references; citations, etc.).
Imitative exercises carried out according to the presented model.
Discussion during the seminar, independent work, and consultations.
Final (summative) assessment:
Review and summary of student presentations.
Test/assignment: reading a self-selected article aligned with a specific methodology (discussion of the assignment in the next class).
Test of the ability to present scholarly content.
In-class summary test consisting of correlating traditionally presented content with various types of charts and other formalisms.
Test of the ability to classify a text as a given type of discourse.
Checking assignment: provide several linguistic phenomena and their definitions as examples.
Test: preparation of a short report based on independent observation, experiment, analysis, etc.
Preparation of a mini-guide containing the basic formal requirements for master’s theses.
Task: find another example of applications.
Semester course credit in a form specified by the instructor.
Assessment criteria:
Attendance.
Active participation (discussion, presentations, etc.).
Preparation for classes (completion of assignments).
Ability to locate specialist literature.
Reading of scholarly texts.
Collaboration with peers and the supervisor.
Grading scale:
5.0 – outstanding knowledge, skills, and personal/social competences.
4.5 – very good knowledge, skills, and personal/social competences.
4.0 – good knowledge, skills, and personal/social competences.
3.5 – satisfactory knowledge, skills, and personal/social competences, but with significant shortcomings.
3.0 – satisfactory knowledge, skills, and personal/social competences, but with numerous errors.
2.0 – unsatisfactory knowledge, skills, and personal/social competences.
