Translation of legal and business texts 2510-f2ENG2W-TLBT

The course is aimed at acknowledging students with specificity of legal English (perceived as the language of acts of law) and business English. The focus of analysis are characteristic syntactic, stylistic and semantic features; legal and business terms are also discussed. The course concentrates on textual analysis and translation of various legal and business texts (presenting a varied level of difficulty). The stress is also put on text comprehension in the extralinguistic perspective as well as elements vital for translation workshop (information-mining skills or the ability to use available sources).
Activities during the course consist in translating texts in groups or in pairs (or individually) as well as discussing specific aspects of translations prepared by students.

The student: U1: is able to translate business and legal texts such as contracts, company documents, financial reports, etc. from Polish into English. (K_W11, K_U12, K_K02) U2: is able to translate advanced business and legal texts such as contracts, company documents, financial reports from English into Polish (K_W11, K_U04, K_U12) U3: is able to perceive differences as to the register and varieties of the language for special purposes (K_W11, K_U12, K_U14)

Learning outcomes - social competencies

The student: K1: is able to work in a group or a team, to discuss, use argumentation skills and present various translation options concerning the task. (K_K02) K2: is able to apply in practice ethical standards binding in the translator’s profession, starting from accepting the assignment (task commencement) until translation performance (task completion). (K_K02) K3: is able to recognise problems and challenges connected with the translator’s profession and is able to analyse relevant needs. (K_K01)

Prerequisites

Proficiency in Polish. Knowledge of legal and business terminology as discussed in previous two semesters.

Assessment criteria

Assessment methods:

The final examination grade is the sum of the following:
− the results of in-class/ out-of-class tasks involving translation of an excerpt of business and legal texts (30%) (W1, W3, U1, U3, K1, K3)
− the results of a final semester test consisting in translating one excerpt of L&B text from Polish into English and one excerpt of L&B text from English into Polish. (70%) (W1, W3, U1, U2, U3, K3)

satisfactory – 60-69 %
satisfactory plus – 70-75 %
good – 76-85 %
good plus – 86-90 %
very good – 91-100 %
