Sociology for students of English - Sociology of language 2510-f2ENG2S-SSE-SLA
The main aim of the course is to familiarize students with the functioning of "special"sociologies against the example of the sociology of language. In the first part of the course attention will be given to theoretical and meta-scientific issues, such as: the theoretical preliminaries and main terms, subfields of the subject of sociology and the relationships betwee sociology of language and sociolinguistics, historical connections of linguistics and social sciences, evolution of paradigms in linguistics and social sciences, linguistic and sociological structuralism, social functions of language, cultural relativity and the relationships of social anthropology and language.
The second part of the course will refer to the main trends in the sociology of language and specific case studies: individual speech behaviour and idiolects, sociolects and their types, social and language socialisation, communicative situations with their models and varieties, bilingualism, biculturalism, diglossia and di-ethnia, language and group/individual identity, relationships between language and religion, ecolinguistics and ecology of language, social reproduction, language and symbolic power, Bernstein's restricted and elaborated code, the "engaged sociology" in linguistics, gender linguistics, language manipulation and the use of language means to achieve non-linguistic goals.

Assessment criteria
Evaluation methods:
Prior to each class session, students are required to complete designated tasks, and at the conclusion of the class, instead of a traditional test, they will be expected to submit a project. Points will be awarded based on the completion of these tasks and the quality of the project. The final result (percentage of total points available) will be assessed as follows:
0%-59% = fail
60%-67% = 3
68%-75% = 3+
76%-82% = 4
83%-90% = 4+
91%-100% = 5
The partial tests and tasks verifiy the following competences:

has advanced knowledge of the relationships of sociology and linguistics;
has advanced knowledge of the methods applied in the sociology of language;
has advanced knowledge of the main research trends in the sociology of language
