Week 1 Introduction: Flannery O’Connor’s life and work
Weeks 2-4 O’Connor’s earliest short stories, including “The Geranium”, analysis of the original text and its translation into Polish.
Weeks 5-7 analysis and translation of selected essays by Flannery O’Connor
Week 8 Summary and midterm test
Weeks 9-11 analysis and translation of selected letters by Flannery O’Connor
Weeks 12-14 analysis and translation of selected short stories, for example “The Revelation” or “The Displaced Person.”
Week 15 Final test.

Contact hours with the teacher: - participation in classes - 30 hrs Self-study hours: - preparation for classes: reading critical and literary texts - 25 hrs - preparation for classes: webquest – 25 hrs - preparation for the midterm test - 20 hrs - preparation for the final test – 25 hrs Altogether: 125 hrs (5 ECTS)

Learning outcomes - knowledge

The student W1: possesses structured and in-depth knowledge of American literature and literary studies, supporting critical analysis of contemporary societal issues and their relevance to the philologist’s professional role (K_W10).

Learning outcomes - skills

The student U1: applies advanced philological theories to analyze fiction and nonfiction, drawing conclusions about literary and translation traditions and testing hypotheses relevant to English philology (K_U07). U2: is able to deepen their knowledge of Flannery O’Connor and American literature of the mid-20th century and develop their research skills on their own (K_U11).

Learning outcomes - social competencies

The student K1: reads and discusses English texts related to Flannery O’Connor and actively contributes to class-based initiatives that promote literary knowledge and social awareness (K_K03).
