Translation of non-literary texts 2510-f2ENG1W-TNLT

The course presents technical and synchrony-related issues in the translation of audiovisual texts and research into audiovisual translation. The topics include:
- polysemiotic and monosemiotic texts, constrained translation, interlingual, intralingual and intersemiotic translation, isosemiotic and diasemiotic translation
- technical standards and constraints, synchrony between channels in film translation
- subtitling: reducing and dividing captions, spotting, basic functions of subtitling software
- translation for voice-over: text synchronization, reduction, speakability
- translation for audio-description as intersemiotic translation: conventions and common mistakes
- translation for dubbing: production process and technical requirements

The order and extent of the above topics is subject to change to accommodate students' needs and interests.

Learning outcomes - knowledge

A student: W1 (K_W06) lists and explains main directions in audiovisual translation studies, with a special focus on the impact new technologies have had on the study of audiovisual texts and their translation and accessibility W2 (K_W07) identifies and explains the terms and concepts used in the study and practice of audiovisual translation W3 (K_W11) has an in-depth knowledge of specialised terminology used in the profession of audiovisual translation

Learning outcomes - skills

A student: U1 (K_U04) cooperates online while researching and translating audiovisual texts, communicating problems and conclusions to other translation team members U2 (K_U05) effectively communicates with the (simulated) client or collaborator to clarify the commission and to explain the impact of translation conventions and differences between Polish and English on translation decisions in various modes of audiovisual translation U3 (K_U10) uses professional literature and guidelines on audiovisual translation to describe changing conventions and technical standards in audiovisual translation U4 (K_U12) identifies culturally-loaded items in the source text and offers translations anticipating potential cultural problems in audiovisual translation

30% - group work (onlne and in class) on preparing audiovisual translations for a specific type of audience: U1, U2, U4
20% - preparing test materials (summarizing the findings of academic papers in audivisual translation studies): W1, W2, W3, U10
40% - written tests: W1, W2, W3
10% - in-class activity: U2, W2
