Translation of non-literary texts 2510-f2ENG1S-TNLT

The course will present basic typologies and descriptions related to translation of non-literary texts. Students will get acquainted with basic techniques used to solve translation problems. Particular focus will be put upon specialist terminology and Polish and English textual convention. Students will master their competence working with authentic original texts and translations. Both individually and in groups, they will analyze source texts, translate, edit and correct texts, discuss mistakes as well as advantages and disadvantages of particular strategies.
Students will achieve learning outcomes, which will enable them to analyze and translate non-literary texts from selected areas into Polish and English.
Contents:
• Introduction: (learning outcomes, course requirements, contents, evaluation criteria and code of conduct).
• Analysis, translation and correction of Polish and English non-literary and specialist texts.

Evaluation:
• Test – translation of selected excerpts into Polish and English
• Feedback on the test
The order and extent of the above topics is subject to change to accommodate students' needs and interests.

Total student workload

1 ECTS = 30 hour workload per semester Contact hours with teacher: - participation in the seminar - 30 hrs - assigment-related feedback - 5 hrs Self-study hours: - homework (translating and editing) - 10 hrs - preparation for classes (reading, Moodle activities) - 10 hrs - revision for the final test - 5 hrs Altogether: 60 hrs (2 ECTS)

Assessment criteria

The assignments (in the form of online, in-class and homework tasks) shall be kept in a (printed or electronic) portfolio to facilitate monitoring student's progress and grading.

2 unexcused absences per semester.

To earn a credit for the semester, students will need a passing grade for both components: In-class activity proving social competencies (i.e. group translation tasks) and the final translation test:

- Class participation and home assignments - W2, U1, U2, U3, K1, K2(30%)
- Final test (translation of excerpts from selected areas into Polish and English)
- W1, U2, U3, K1(70%)

fail – 0-59%
satisfactory – 60-69 %
satisfactory plus – 70-75 %
good – 76-85 %
good plus – 86-90%
very good – 91-100
