Translation of legal and business texts

The aim of the course is to expand the knowlegde of legal and business issues and analyse the jargon applied in legal and business texts as well as to translate such texts. Texts will be discussed with regard to their syntax, style, and semantics, with particular focus on the business and legal jargon, and translated in groups or individually. Emphasis will be put on understanding the extralinguistic factors and applying a range of translation tools. Translations will be discussed in the classroom. Topics will include: financial statements, enterprise resource planning, BMD certificates, testaments, marriage and divorce-related documents, agreements, and the European Union. Due to time constraints not all topics may be covered during the semester and may be updated to address students' needs.

Learning outcomes - knowledge
The student:
W1: has in-depth knowledge of languages for special purposes, particularly Business and legal English. (K_W11)
W2: has in-depth knowledge of legal and ethical aspects of professional activity in terms of handling both translations and clients. (K_W12)
W3: knows the principles of creating and developing various forms of business activity and has in-depth knowledge of the business aspects of professional activity in Poland and the English-speaking countries. (K_W13)
Learning outcomes - skills
The student:
U1: can use advanced IT technologies during research and the presentation of research results with regard to EN<>PL translation. (K_U04)
U2: can communicate in English (in speaking and writing) with recipients from various environments sharing with them expert knowledge of a given field of study and the research conducted with regard to EN<>PL translation. (K_U05)
U3: can work and assume different roles, including that of a leader, in a team while rendering translations or preparing presentations concerning legal and business texts. (K_U09)
U4: can indicate the purposes and methods of lifelong learning to others with regard to developing translation competence. (K_U10)
U5: can translate advanced - specifically, business and legal - texts from English into Polish and from Polish into English. (K_U12)

The student:
K1: appreciates the achievements of the translator's profession and can behave in a professionally responsible manner while translating texts for clients. (K_K04)

Assessment methods:
The final examination grade is the sum of the following:
− the results of in-class/out-of-class tasks involving translation of an excerpt of business and legal texts (30%) (W1, W3, U1, U3, K1, K3)
− the results of a final examination test consisting in translating one excerpt of non-literary text from Polish into English and one excerpt of non-literary text from English into Polish. (70%) (W1, W3, U1, U2, U3, K3)

fail – 0-59 %
satisfactory – 60-69 %
satisfactory plus – 70-75 %
good – 76-85 %
good plus – 86-90 %
very good – 91-100 %
