Language and linguistics today: Introduction to subtitling 2510-f1ENG3W-LLT-ITS
Students are introduced to:
- key concepts in audiovisual translation,
- history and development of subtitling,
- types of subtitling,
- techniques of reducing text used in subtitling,
- principles of breaking lines and using layout to facilitate fluent reading,
- technical requirements in subtitling,
- punctuation conventions used in subtitling in English and Polish,
- subtitling documents and workflow,
- basic functions of free subtitling applications.
Students will prepare a sample subtitle translation, discuss their reasons for taking particulafr translation decisions and critically analyse each other's work.

Assessment criteria
Presentation of translation aims and the decision-making process by a student-translator working on a subtitle translation of a short audiovisual text: U1, 15%
Presentation of the issues noted and improvements suggested by a student-editor to the first draft translation: U4, 15%
The final version of a subtitle translation, prepared by a student-translator and student-editor: U2, 30%
Joint presentation by the translator and the editor, discussing the final version of the translation: U3, 30% (15%: translator's overview of corrections + 15%: editor's: discussion of a specific problem, with reference to translation studies sources)
In-class activity: U1, U2, U3, U4 (10%)
