Language and linguistics today: Introduction to subtitling 2510-f1ENG3W-LLT-ITS

Students are introduced to:
- key concepts in audiovisual translation,
- history and development of subtitling,
- types of subtitling,
- techniques of reducing text used in subtitling,
- principles of breaking lines and using layout to facilitate fluent reading,
- technical requirements in subtitling,
- punctuation conventions used in subtitling in English and Polish,
- subtitling documents and workflow,
- basic functions of free subtitling applications.
Students will prepare a sample subtitle translation, discuss their reasons for taking particulafr translation decisions and critically analyse each other's work.

Total student workload

5 ECTS = 120 hours 30 hours - participation in classes 30 hours - preparing subtitle translation (analysing materials and guidelines, taking notes and preparing a preliminary version of the translation, text division, spotting and adjustment of display times, corrections) 15 hours - analysing one's own translation and preparing a presentation from the translator's standpoint 5 hours - correcting an audiovisual translation in cooperation with the translator 10 hours - analysing another student's translation and preparing a presentation from the editor's standpoint 15 hours - other homework (preparing and editing translations) 15 hours - familiarization with materials available through Moodle, including software for creating and editing subtitles

The student U1 (K_U02): analyzes documents related to subtitle translation (guidelines for translators, dialogue lists, subtitle templates) to identify technical limitations and potential translation problems U2 (K_U05): communicates effectively in English with team members in order to prepare and improve subtitle translations U3 (K_U06): orally discusses subtitle translation using terminology and concepts related to audiovisual translation research U4 (K_U15): orally describes and evaluates specific translation decisions, explains the available options and their potential consequences for the translator and the recipient

Prerequisites

Interest in audiovisual tranlsation. As the course involves English-Polish translation, a good command of Polish (C1 ESOKJ) as well as English is required.

Assessment criteria

Presentation of translation aims and the decision-making process by a student-translator working on a subtitle translation of a short audiovisual text: U1, 15%
Presentation of the issues noted and improvements suggested by a student-editor to the first draft translation: U4, 15%
The final version of a subtitle translation, prepared by a student-translator and student-editor: U2, 30%
Joint presentation by the translator and the editor, discussing the final version of the translation: U3, 30% (15%: translator's overview of corrections + 15%: editor's: discussion of a specific problem, with reference to translation studies sources)
In-class activity: U1, U2, U3, U4 (10%)
