Language and linguistics today: Problems and strategies in translation 2510-f1ENG2W-LLT-PST
The seminar aims at the introduction of basic notions and concepts within the field of Translation Studies perceived mainly from the translator’s perspective and focusing on problems and strategies that translators employ . The range of topics discussed during sessions includes various approaches to TS and their practical implementation as well as most frequently occurring translation difficulties and methods of problem solving. The course also reflects upon such issues as translation competence and the need for constant self-imprvement and knowledge accrual, requirements for translators in their professional undertakings and the position of translators on the market.
Each session is structurally divided into two parts: theoretical (when theoretical aspects are discussed) and practical (with the realisation of those aspects in practice analysed on the basis of real texts and examples).
The students are expected to read the texts from the reading list and participate in the discussions during seminar sessions. Attendance requirements are as stipulated by general regulations for seminars

Assessment criteria
The students participating in the seminar will be assessed on the basis of class involvement and a a team presentation produced at the end of the course. The presentation will be focused on the analysis of a selected translation (of a novel, article, poem, slogans, etc.) or a discussion of problems occurring in translation. The choice of the presentation topic depends on a team's joint decision. The supervisor will offer any necessary help and guidance (e.g., suggesting further reading, improvements or analysis, if necessary) in the project. Presentations will be given in class at the end of the course.
