Specialisation seminar: Translator’s competence and skills 2510-f1ENG2S-SS-TCAS

The course is devoted to translation competence and creativity discussed in the context of various translation theories. Particular taxonomies and models are assessed critically in terms of their usefulness for practitioners. The focus is put on culture-specific items and problems in translating them. Apart from theoretical considerations, problems concerning translator’s workshop are discussed.

The course will cover:

- PACTE and EMT groups' typologies of competences

- typology of errors/mistakes

- Antony Pym's approach to competence - a minimalist approach

- Don Kiraly’s views on translator’s competence and education

- Translator training in Poland

- Problem-solving process in translation process.

- Creativity in translation: the four phase model of cognition; divergent thinking

- Translator’s creativity vs. constraints on it

- Selected aspects of translation psychology.

- Types of cultural references, strategies and procedures to render them in translation

- The use of dictionaries – problems and solutions

- Electronic tools for translators – introduction

- Translator's workshop and job opportunities.

Total student workload

Contact hours with teacher: - participation in the seminar - 30 hrs - individual contact with the teacher (Moodle, e-mail, office hours) - 5 hrs Self-study hours: - preparation for the test - 15 hrs - preparation for classes and homework - 15 hrs - preparation of a presentation – 10 hrs Altogether: 75 hrs (3 ECTS)

W1: The student knows advanced typologies of translation competence and culture-specific items, selected translation strategies and related concepts. (K_W10)

Learning outcomes - skills

The student U1: is able to use selected translation tools to analyse the ST and find translation equivalents (K_U01) U2: is capable of providing alternative Polish equivalents for culture-specific items in an English ST (for selected areas) (K_U03) U3: is capable of providing alternative English equivalents for culture-specific items in a Polish ST (for selected areas) (K_U04)

Learning outcomes - social competencies

The student K1: is aware of the level of their knowledge and skills, understands the need for constant learning and is able to work and assume various roles in a team. (K_K01, K_K02)
