Specialisation seminar: Translator’s competence and skills 2510-f1ENG2S-SS-TCAS
The course is devoted to translation competence and creativity discussed in the context of various translation theories. Particular taxonomies and models are assessed critically in terms of their usefulness for practitioners. The focus is put on culture-specific items and problems in translating them. Apart from theoretical considerations, problems concerning translator’s workshop are discussed.
The course will cover:
- PACTE and EMT groups' typologies of competences
- typology of errors/mistakes
- Antony Pym's approach to competence - a minimalist approach
- Don Kiraly’s views on translator’s competence and education
- Translator training in Poland
- Problem-solving process in translation process.
- Creativity in translation: the four phase model of cognition; divergent thinking
- Translator’s creativity vs. constraints on it
- Selected aspects of translation psychology.
- Types of cultural references, strategies and procedures to render them in translation
- The use of dictionaries – problems and solutions
- Electronic tools for translators – introduction
- Translator's workshop and job opportunities.
