The seminar will focus on the role of fantastic and supernatural elements of Anglophone cultures and the way they function in speculative fiction. The discussion will concern the symbolism and significance of phenomena and entities referred to as “weird,” “strange” and “supernatural” in the discussed texts. →speculative fiction as a way of expressing humanity's desires and anxieties (motherhood and society)
→speculative fiction as a way of imagining humanity's future and heritage (progress and deterioration)
→speculative fiction as a way of dealing with difficult issues (death, guilt, and ostracism)
Warning: due to the nature of the genre, the examined texts may include disturbing content.
