Language and linguistics today: Analysis of literary texts for translators 2510-f1ENG2S-LLT-ALT
The course introduces key terms in poetics and literary stylistics for the purposes of pre-translation literary analysis and translation assessment. The students practice close reading and annotating literary texts in terms of literary devices and the relationship between style and meaning in a literary work. In-class tasks include text analysis and translation review in terms of:
- typography
- sound
- rhyme
- rhythm
- repetition
- sentence structure
- diction
- imagery
- charatcerization
- point of view, narrative mode.

- justifying the choice of a literary text and aspects of its style for analysis
- describing the selected aspect of the text and analysing the significance of stylistic factors for the reception of the text
- defining the criteria for the success of the text's literary translation
- analysing and evaluating the translation, outlining reception research
- preparing a recorded presentation of a selected fragment of the literary text in English and Polish in terms of stylistic features
