Latin for students of English 2510-f1ENG1S-LAT

The aim of the Latin course is:
- to learn basic Latin grammar, syntax and lexis;
- to learn how to identify and differentiate various Latin forms;
- to translate basic Latin texts into Polish;
- to learn basic information about the Latin language and culture;
- to discern how the Latin language and culture influenced British language and culture.

Topics of the course include:
- grammar:
1. Nouns and cases in singular and plural - 1st and 2nd declinations
2. Adjectives: 1st and 2nd declinations
3. Verbs: sum, esse and four conjugations; personal pronouns
4. Nouns and adjectives: 3rd, 4th and 5th declination
5. Verbs: active and passive; past participles
6. Pronouns: ille, hic, is and qui; verbs: the subjunctive; possum and volo
7. Coparison, imperatives
8. Participles, gerundives and gerunds
9. Deponent verbs
10. Infinitives, indirect speech, pronouns: se and ipse
- culture:
1. A short history of Rome and Latin language
2. Roman names, numerals, dates and days
3. Roman Britain
4. Latin for doctors and lawyers
5. Church Latin
6. Latin mottoes and inscriptions.

Total student workload

Contact hours: - classes – 30 h Others: - homeworks and preparation for tests and translations – 25 h - consultations – 5 Total: 60 h (2 ECTS)

K1: student has the basic knowledge of Latin (K_W07) K2: student knows the basic Latin grammar, syntax, and lexis (K_W06)

K1: student knows how to search, analyze, assess and select the information needed during the course (K_U01) K2: student can translate basic Latin texts into English and Polish (K_U02)

Assessment criteria

Student to be admitted to the final test is obliged to:
- be present and active during the classes on-line (student is allowed to miss classes once; being absent for 50% of all the classes means that student does not get the grade and is not allowed to participate in the final test) (K_W07, K_K05);
- be prepared for the classes (being unprepared for each two classes counts as one absence) (K_K07, K_U01);
- pass two grammar and translation tests each semester (with questions from Latin lexis; student has three possibilities to pass the translation) (K_W06, K_U02).
Abovementioned conditions are obligatory to be admitted to the final test.
The final test consists of a translation from Latin into Polish (or English) and questions from Latin grammar and Latin lexis, as well as useful Latin abbreviations.
Tthe final test will be graded as follows:
under 60% - failed
60% - passed
80% - good
90% - very good
