Patriotism and nationalism. Ethnic identity vs. civic. Does the east of Europe have an ethnic identity and the west a civic one? Type of identity and reactions to identity threat and openness to the other.
Class 11. National identity and social memory. Group identity projects (group charters). Examples of memory distortions in the service of identity.
Class 12. Identity of place. Local identity. Factors influencing identification with a place. Attachment to place and its types. Transnational (European) identity. Globalization processes and territorial identities (Inglehart, Norris)
