The aim of this course will be to introduce the concepts of hospice movement, palliative care, palliative and hospice care, end-of-life care, care integration; help after loss and accompanying mourning.
The classes will be aimed at showing the non-medical aspects of palliative care, with particular emphasis on the integration of family carers and the local community in the care process. The tasks of educators and other specialists in the field of social sciences (psychologist, social worker) will be presented.
Social, emotional and spiritual problems for end-of-life patients and for bereaved and caring families will be assessed and explained.
The principles of the work of an interdisciplinary team will be presented, as well as the special role of social education and social work in end-of-life care and in the process of bereavement.
Social education on care at the end of life, death and mourning will be outlined, with particular emphasis on voluntary work, involvement of schools and local communities.
Thematic blocks:
1. Discussion of the subject syllabus, presentation of obligatory and additional reading. Presentation of the book by P. Krakowiak et al., Solidarni. Palliative and hospice care in Poland, Gdańsk 2015 (available online for students).
Introduction to palliative care (OP); division of tasks within the framework of discussing the subject and a proposal to create groups dealing with individual elements of OP-presentations.
2. Prenatal OP and the possibility of cooperation with prenatal medicine and parents expecting a disabled child.
3. Pediatric OP and its cooperation with special educators in the home environment and in institutions.
4. Home care for adults, disability of OP patients and possibilities of social support for patients and families.
5. Stationary OP for adults - tasks for educators, psychologists, social workers and volunteers.
6. Support for family caregivers during the exercise of OP - the idea of respite / relieving care and good practices of emotional, spiritual and social support.
7. Volunteering in OP - presentation of development, various forms of volunteering in OP and good practices of cooperation with teams.
8. Support after loss and accompanying in mourning as tasks of OP - presentation of forms of support after loss for various groups. 9. Integration of PO and care for people at the end of life as a task for the local community and examples of effective education on the needs of people at the end of life and their relatives.
10. Summary of the work of the groups responsible for the 8 elements discussed at subsequent meetings during the seminar. Adoption of the presented and revised presentations by subsequent groups. Presentation of the assessment of personal essays based on the analysis of literature for the selected topic, with a personal analysis of the student's own attitude in relation to the end of human life, experienced losses and the experience of mourning.
