Gerontology is an interdisciplinary science that deals with the aging of the human body. She investigates the physiological aspect of this phenomenon and the aspect of aging pathology. Geriatric nursing covers the issues of nursing elderly patients.
The student will acquire knowledge about the aging process of the organism in terms of its biological, psychological and socio-economic aspects, psychophysical differences, specificity of the course of diseases, treatment and care of elderly people. The student will learn the skills of nursing an elderly patient.
Total student workload
Participation in contact classes: 40 hours –1.4p ECTS - self-study 20 hours - 0.6 p ECTS

W1. risk factors for the development of diseases and ailments occurring in old age (e.g. hypertension, atherosclerosis, diabetes, heart disease, dementia, Parkinson's syndrome and depression). D.W1
W4. Types of diagnostic tests used in geriatrics and the principles of their ordering (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ultrasound and others). D.W4.
W6. the properties of drug groups and their effects on the patient's systems and organs in various diseases in the elderly, including side effects, drug interactions and administration routes. D.W6.
W9. the process of aging in its biological, psychological, social and economic aspects. D.W9.
W11. etiopathogenesis of the most common diseases of old age and the distinct course of these diseases. D.W11.
W13. tools and scales for the overall assessment of a geriatric patient. D.W12

Teaching methods
Lectures: informative, problem
Tutorials: clinical classes, methods of exchanging experiences
Didactic methods exposing: demonstration, simulation of high fidelity, work with the patient under the supervision of the teacher; teaching methods giving: information lecture, problem lecture; searching didactic methods: problem method, observation method, project method, case study, situational method, group work, independent study of literature.
Prerequisites
Base of internal medicine.
Assessment criteria
100% attendance at classes and active participation, completing the skills provided in the program of classes. - preparation for classes in accordance with the applicable curriculum - preparation of geriatric issues during the classes - demonstrating a proper professional attitude
The condition for passing the lecture part is: 1. Attendance at lectures (one absent is allowed excused) 2. Passing each (even justified) absence in the form proposed by the person conducting the given topic.
Final credit - covering the topics of lectures, practical classes, exercises

Self-education is correlated with geriatric nursing and is set at practice. Completion of the subject after obtaining more than 60% of the answers.
Final credit (1st and 2nd term) - - test of 30 questions (MCQ - one correct answer - 4 distractors) pass with obtaining more than 60% positive answers:
