Learning objectives of the course:
The lecture is designed to prepare the student to:
- ensure proper environment and select proper techniques of the interview,
application of methods and techniques of physical examination,
assessment of male and female genitourinary system,
assessment of skin and its products condition.
Topics of lectures:
taking patient’s history
conditions of conducting interview with patient
OLD CART; SAMPLE; SOAP
The use of IT for examination
Physical examination in nursing - writing prescriptions, legal regulations.
Practices are devoted preparing students to perform interview and physical examination of newborns, children, adults and geriatric patients, interpreting and documenting examination results, that concern:
The skin, hair and nails, head, eyes, ears and throat;
Reproductive system and the perineum, breasts and axillae, assessment of the infant and child;
Neurologic system, musculoskeletal system;
Hear and peripheral vascular system
Lungs and respiratory system, abdomen and gastrointestinal system
Self-study is designed to develop students’ skills of gaining knowledge and skills regarding physical examination.
Prepare and describe in written:
Conduct physical examination of an adult or a child
Describe assessed person
List types of physical examinations that have beed conducted
Document obtained results according to SOAP
Propose care plan for assessed patient

- practice – 30 hours in PPUKiSM/CSM
Time devoted to individual work
- self-study – 15 hours
- others (reading indicated literature, filling notes, revising the material) – 10 hours

C.W32. Knows and understands the concept and basis of conducting and documenting physical examination;
C.W33. Knows and understands methods and techniques of comprehensive physical examination ;
C.W34. Knows and understands the meaning of subjective and objective examination results in formulating health assessment for nursing care;
C.W35. Knows and understands methods of conducting physical examination with a use of communication and information systems;

C.U43. Manages to perform a physical examination of the patient, analyze and interpret the results;
C.U44. Manages to recognize and interpret the basic distinctiveness of the examination of newborn adult and geriatric patient;
C.U45. Manages to use techniques of physical examination to assess the physiological and pathophysiological functions of the skin, senses, head, chest, breasts, abdominal, genitals, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, peripheral circulatory system, musculoskeletal system and nervous system, as well as, document the results and use them to assess patient’s health condition;
C.U46. Manages to perform comprehensive interview and physical examination, document its results and analyze it for the use nursing care;
C.U47. Manages to preform physical examination with a use of communication and information systems;

Prerequisites
Students are obligated to receive credits from anatomy and physiology before starting physical examination course.
Students should be able to describe the structures of human organism and interactions between them.
The knowledge and practical skills presented during the course prepare nursing students to conduct physical assessment of patients’ health condition which enables to make accurate diagnosis.
