Clinical Physiotherapy, Clinical Basis of Physiotherapy: Geriatrics 1855-F2-G-SJ

The subject is conducted in the form of lectures and exercises. Students taking classes have knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system and the physiology of exercise. They know the health and safety rules applicable in the Department and Clinic of Geriatrics. The lectures are intended to explain the specificity of geriatrics. Theories of aging and major geriatric problems will be presented, and attention will be paid to the issues of society aging. The specificity of geriatric physiotherapy, programming of physiotherapy for older patients, including the assumptions of the ICF will be discussed. During the lectures, the student will learn about the types of cognitive disorders. The exercises are devoted to the analysis of the health condition of a geriatric patient, in particular a comprehensive geriatric assessment, red flags in geriatrics, and the rules of transferring and moving an elderly person. The student will acquire basic knowledge and skills in the field of geriatrics - the human aging process, geriatric problems, the specific course of diseases, care and rehabilitation of elderly patients.

Learning outcomes - knowledge

In terms of knowledge, the student knows and understands: W1: etiology, pathomechanism, symptoms and course of the most common geriatric diseases to the extent enabling rational use of physiotherapy measures (D.W3) W2: principles of diagnosis and general principles and methods of treatment in the most common diseases in geriatrics to the extent enabling the rational use of physiotherapy measures (D.W4) W3: general principles of subjective and objective geriatric examination (D.W6) W4: physiology of the aging process and principles of care and geriatric physiotherapy (D.W12) W5: threats related to hospitalization of older people (D.W13) W6: assumptions and principles of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) (D.W16)

In terms of skills, the student is able to: U1: perform a detailed examination for physiotherapy purposes and functional tests of the musculoskeletal system and save and interpret its results (D.U1) U2: perform a comprehensive geriatric assessment and interpret its results (D.U44)

In terms of social competences, the student is ready to: K1: noticing and recognizing one's own limitations, self-assessing educational deficits and needs (K5) K2: using objective sources of information (K6) K3: implementing the principles of professional camaraderie and cooperation in a team of specialists, including representatives of other medical professions, also in a multicultural and multinational environment (K.7)
