Internal Diseases and Internal Medicine Nursing 1800-P2-CHWPI-S1
Internal medicine nursing - the subject is implemented in the second year of full-time bachelor's degree in nursing in the form of lectures, practical classes, professional practice and self-study.
LECTURES (25h on-line) are designed to equip students with up-to-date knowledge of the scope, ways and principles of nursing patients with internal medicine diseases of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, hematopoietic systems, with metabolic diseases and non-traumatic diseases of the locomotor system.
Permanent elements discussed in lectures are: characteristics of typical patients with internal medicine conditions, the most common nursing problems of patients in particular units and conditions, the scope and directions of collecting information about the patient's condition, and nursing interventions adapted to the nursing diagnosis (from the groups of therapeutic, caring and educational interventions).
An important element is education in specific disease units - its areas and content, as well as the specifics of implementation depending on the patient's need, age, condition and level of motivation.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all lectures are held remotely using the MC Teams platform according to the original schedule.
At a minimum, 50% of the classes are held online (synchronously), the remaining time can be used for students' independent study of the literature and teaching materials provided.
If a student is absent from a lecture, he/she is required to work on issues thematically related to the lecture and submit the study as indicated by the lecturer.
PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES are aimed at the acquisition by the students of the competencies necessary in the practical care of patients with internal medicine diseases in a hospital setting and under the supervision of teachers of the profession. Great emphasis is placed during the classes on the formation of an active attitude of the student towards the patient, manifested by involvement in the correct and as complete as possible recognition of his/her condition, problems, needs, and then planning and implementing nursing activities taking into account the individualized approach to the patient.
Students, based on their knowledge and abilities, improve their skills:
- establishing interpersonal contact,
- collecting data about the patient,
- making a nursing diagnosis,
- planning and documenting care,
- creative approach in practical solution of nursing problems - performing instrumental activities.
On each day of classes, a topic on practical aspects of care in selected internal medicine conditions is implemented. Practical classes for CM students in Bydgoszcz are held in the Department of Allergology, Clinical Immunology and Internal Medicine located in the Dr. J. Biziel University Hospital No. 2.
Students perform all nursing activities and procedures with the permission and under the supervision of the teachers and employed staff of the clinic) Full nursing uniform, safe changeable footwear and a clearly readable ID badge are mandatory.
Any changed health situation (e.g. pregnancy) should be reported to the subject coordinator or instructor. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the current guidelines ( contained in the announcement No. 2 of the Vice Chancellor dated March 11, 2022, it is prohibited for people to attend practical classes:
- With cold symptoms and/or suggestive of possible SARS-CoV2 virus infection,
- being on isolation/quarantine imposed by SANEPID,
- who do not have a certificate confirming completion of a set of vaccinations against Covid-19 / who do not have doctor-confirmed recovery status
- who refuse to take the PCR test for Covid-19, which is the only condition for participation in classes for those who do not have a vaccination certificate or recovery status.
In addition, during the pandemic period during practical classes, the rules for preventing the spread of the SARSCoV2 virus, regulated in detail by the orders (and their updates) of the Rector of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun on the prevention of the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus among members of the community of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and the internal regulations of the unit where the practical training takes place, apply.
10 hours of the practical training dimension are devoted to practicing nursing skills in the care of internal medicine patients in the conditions of a high-fidelity simulation room (HSC) using a scenario (Medical Simulation Center at Kurpinski Street).
Topics for the simulation scenarios to be carried out can be found in the PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES section in Part B of this form
SELF-TRAINING develops responsibility for one's own professional development and creativity in planning patient care. It consists of self-exploration of sources of information, assimilation of knowledge in the assigned subject area and development of a problem assignment in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. The student's study constitutes a document and is subject to archiving.
Topics for self-study assignments, evaluation criteria and rules for the submission of papers can be found in the SELF-TRAINING section in Part B of this form.
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE is aimed at applying the previously acquired knowledge and improving the skills necessary in caring for patients, in cooperation with the therapeutic team, as well as a more complete implementation of the principles of organization of work in the ward under the supervision of a mentor (the student's supervisor at the practice).
Summer internship in internal medicine nursing (160 h) is carried out in an inpatient facility, and the clinic/department where the student carries it out should include in its name the member - "internal medicine" or "internal diseases".
IMPORTANT ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE!!!
When organizing the internship individually (i.e., choosing a non-university facility or doing the internship in advance, outside of the dates established top-down), the student himself must obtain the relevant approvals:
- preliminary written approval of the management division of the institution (Chief Nurse/Director of Nursing/Director of the institution) - PLACE for confirmation of approval on the application for referral to practice/cooperation/agreement is SIGNATURE OF THE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE TRAINING UNIT
- consent of the person responsible for the realization of the internship in the field of INTERNATURAL NURSING (A. Dowbór-Dzwonka, M.Sc.) - after verification of the chosen institution (does not apply to institutions with concluded agreement) and the person of the mentor (SIGNATURE SEAT confirming consent to the application to Ms. Dean for the conclusion of an agreement/issuance of referral for practice is the SIGNATURE of the person responsible for the practice from the given departmental unit);
- consent of Ms. Dean of WNoZ to conclude an agreement with the selected facility / to establish cooperation / to issue a referral).
Printed and typed out application for conclusion of an agreement - specimen on the website of the Dean's Office - signed by all required persons should be sent to the Dean's Office of WNoZ during the pandemic period electronically to the email addresses indicated in the message to students in the form of scans/photos of documents), enclosing a statement on the possession of liability insurance.
Due to the electronic circulation of documents, it is necessary to send them for approval well in advance, optimally two weeks before the established date of practice.
In order to be able to carry out the verification of the facility and the person to act as mentor, the student is obliged to:
* print from the CM UMK website (Faculty of Health Sciences, section STUDENT, tab PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES) , *submit to the facility for completion and approval,
*deliver the following documents to the person responsible for the implementation of the practice:
- facility evaluation sheet (Facility Selection Criteria), which should be completed and confirmed with a signature and stamp by a person from the management division of that facility.
NOTE: If more than one student goes to a particular facility for professional practice, it is sufficient to obtain one evaluation sheet for that facility.
- mentor evaluation sheet (Criteria for selection of a mentor for professional practice), which is filled out and confirmed by the person who is to act as a mentor; on this sheet, at the bottom, there should also be the stamp of the institution where this person is employed. A MENTOR is a person who takes direct care of a student during the entire duration of the internship.
To serve as a mentor at the internship, a person should meet certain criteria - have a university degree and a professional title of Master of Nursing or have a specialization in a field applicable to nursing, and experience in practical training of nursing staff.
A STUDENT ORGANIZING AN INDIVIDUAL INTERNSHIP IS REQUIRED TO PRINT OUT FROM THE SITE OF THE INSTITUTION OF
OF INTERNAL MEDICINE NURSING THE SO-CALLED. MENTOR PACKAGE or, alternatively, the SUBJECT SYLABUS - the section on professional practice.
The package/syllabus includes the objectives of the practice, the assumed learning outcomes, the subject matter, the regulations and criteria for its passing. If a given mentor supervises a group of students FROM THE SAME YEAR at the SAME TIME , it is sufficient to provide him/her with one copy of the mentor packet/syllabus.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the possibility of internships will depend on the current epidemic situation.
The entry of final credit for apprenticeship is made by mentors in skill books. Entries should be made legibly and completely.
Confirmation of the completion and passing of the apprenticeship is made by the person coordinating the apprenticeship within the unit (the apprenticeship manager or his/her designee).
