Introduction to Surgery
1655-Lek3PCHIM-J
The objective of the lectures is to convey to the students the basic concepts of general surgery, patient preparation for burgery, perioperative patient management, and the basics of anaesthesia and pain control . The students are acquainted with the basics of wound healing, surgical instruments and the methods for the prevention and treatment of infection. Other topics covered include: acute abdomen, bleeding, trauma, including burns, as well as the basics of endoscopy and laparoscopy.
During the tutorials the students learn practical skills covewring patient examination, small surgical procedures (suture placement and removal, catheterization and others listed in the practical skills section). During tutorials in the surgical suite, the students are acquainted with the rules of asepsis and antisepsis technique, basic surgical instruments and techniques.
Exercises are held in the clinic, clinic clinics, in the block
Operational Center and the Medical Simulation Center.

Learning outcomes - skills
The student:
U1: is able to perform a full and targeted physical examination of an adult patient (E K_U03) – this outcome is realized both in remote and stationary learning
U2:
Knows how to perform basic medical procedures, including:
1) taking temperature (core and peripheral) and pulse, non-invasive pressure measurement,
2) monitoring vital signs using a cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter,
3) spirometry testing, oxygen therapy, adjuvant and mechanical ventilation,
4) oropharyngeal airway insertion,
5) intravascular, intramuscular and subcutaneous injection, peripheral venous cannulation, peripheral blood draw, blood culture draw, arterial blood draw, arterialised capillary blood draw,
6) nasal, pharyngeal and skin swabbing,
7) urinary catheterisation in men and women, gastric probing, gastric lavage, enema,
8) standard resting electrocardiogram with interpretation, electrical cardioversion, defibrillation,
9) basic strip tests and blood glucose level tests
; (E K_U29)
– this outcome is realized in stationary mode
U3: is able to manage the patient’s medical records (E K_U38) – - this outcome is realized in stationary mode
U4: follows the principles of asepsis and antisepsis;( F K_U03) – this outcome is realized in stationary mode
U5: is able to obtain peripheral venous access;( F K_U05) – this outcome is realized in stationary mode
U6: : knows how to examine the breasts, lymph nodes and thyroid gland, examine the abdominal cavity for signs of acute abdomen, and perform a digital rectal examination ( F K_U06) – this outcome is realized in stationary mode
Learning outcomes - social competencies
K1: Shows respect for the Patient and understanding for worldview and cultural differences (K_K05) - learning effect realized in stationary conditions
