Medical Psychology with Elements of Crisis Intervention

The course provides knowledge to help to adopt healthy lifestyle, including adequate stress management. Moreover, it offers learning techniques of coping with stress, i.e. self-regulation, re-escalation, breathing exercises, mindfulness, imaginative techniques, reformulation, time management.
On the other hand, it explores the negative psychological and somatic consequences of chronic stress, i.e. burnout. It also explains basics of crisis intervention.
Total student workload
1. The workload related to classes requiring direct participation of academic teachers is:
- Seminar participation: 5 hours
- participation in exercises: 10 hours
- Passing the exam: 2 hours
The workload for classes requiring direct participation of academic staff is 17 hours, which corresponds to 0.68 ECTS points

The student knows:
W1. the concepts of health and illness, the impact of the social environment (family, work, social relations) and socio-cultural conditions (origin, social status, religion, nationality, ethnic group) on the patient's health (D.W.1)
W2: human behaviours conducive to maintaining health, principles of health promotion, prevention and primary and secondary prevention (D.W.2)
W3: the concept of stress, including eustress and distress, and the impact of stress on the pathogenesis and course of somatic diseases and mental disorders as well as coping mechanisms (D.W.11)
W4: symptoms of physician burnout syndrome and methods of its prevention (D.W.12)

The student is able to:
U1: recognize one's own emotions and direct them in relationships with others in order to perform work effectively despite one's own emotional reactions (D.U.9)
