The purpose of the internship at the Department of Internal Medicine is to supplement the knowledge about the organization of the Department of Internal Medicine (Clinic) and the organizational connection of the Department (Clinic) with open healthcare, to improve the skills of medical history and physical examination, to familiarize with the principles of first aid, resuscitation and resuscitation, to deepen the ability to recognize and differentiation of basic disease entities, with particular emphasis on acute cases, getting acquainted with the principles of interpretation of laboratory, radiological and pathomorphological test results, participation in medical rounds. The student should actively participate in the activities of the unit where he/she carries out the practice. They should develop teamwork skills and organize workstations in accordance with legal and ethical principles.
Term 2022/23:

The student should actively participate in the activities of the unit where he/she carries out the practice. Learning outcomes - knowledge
E.W1. knows the environmental and epidemiological conditions of the most common diseases;
E.W7. knows and understands the causes, symptoms, principles of diagnosis and treatment in relation to the most common internal adult diseases and their complications:
a) cardiovascular diseases, including: ischemic heart disease, heart defects, endocardial diseases, heart muscle diseases, pericardial diseases, heart failure (acute and chronic), arterial and venous diseases, arterial hypertension: primary and secondary, pulmonary hypertension,
b) diseases of the respiratory system, including: respiratory diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, respiratory system infections, interstitial lung diseases, pleura, mediastinum, obstructive and central sleep apnea, respiratory failure
(acute and chronic), respiratory system cancers,
c) diseases of the digestive system, including diseases of the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach and duodenum, intestines, pancreas, liver, bile ducts and gallbladder,
d) diseases of the endocrine system, including diseases of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal cortex and medulla, ovaries and testes, as well as neuroendocrine tumors, polyglandular syndromes, various types of diabetes and metabolic syndrome: hypoglycemia, obesity, dyslipidemia,
e) diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, including: acute and chronic kidney failure, diseases of the glomeruli and interstitial kidneys, kidney cysts, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, urinary tract cancers, in particular bladder cancer and kidney cancer,
f) diseases of the hematopoietic system, including: bone marrow aplasia, anaemia, granulocytopenia and agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, acute leukaemia, myeloproliferative and myelodysplastic-myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, neoplasms from mature B and T lymphocytes, bleeding disorders, thrombophilia, life-threatening conditions in hematology, blood disorders in diseases of other organs;
g) rheumatic diseases, including: systemic connective tissue diseases, systemic vasculitis, arthritis with involvement of the spine, metabolic bone diseases, in particular osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, gout,
h) allergic diseases, including: anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock and angioedema,
i) water-electrolyte and acid-base disorders: dehydration, overhydration, electrolyte disturbances, acidosis and alkalosis;
E.W8. knows and understands the course and symptoms of the aging process, as well as the principles of comprehensive geriatric assessment and interdisciplinary care in relation to an elderly patient;
E.W9. understands the causes and knows the basic differences in the most common diseases in the elderly and the rules of conduct in basic geriatric syndromes;
E.W10. knows and understands the basic principles of pharmacotherapy of diseases in the elderly;
E.W11. knows and understands the risks associated with hospitalization of the elderly;
E.W12. knows and understands the basic principles of the organization of care for the elderly and the burdens of the caregiver of the elderly;
E.W37. knows the types of biological materials used in laboratory diagnostics and the principles of collecting material for testing;
E.W38. knows the theoretical and practical basis of laboratory diagnostics;
E.W39. knows and understands the possibilities and limitations of laboratory tests in emergencies;
E.W40. lists indications for the implementation of monitored therapy;
E.W41. defines basic pharmacoeconomic concepts.
Learning outcomes - skills
E.U1. conducts a medical interview with an adult patient;
E.U3. conducts a complete and targeted physical examination of the adult patient;
E.U12. performs differential diagnosis of the most common diseases of adults and children;
E.U13. assesses and describes the somatic and mental state of the patient;
E.U14. recognizes life-threatening situations;
E.U15. recognizes the state after the consumption of alcohol, drugs and other stimulants;
E.U16. plans diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic procedures;
E.U17. conducts an analysis of possible side effects of individual drugs and interactions between them;
E.U18. proposes individualization of existing therapeutic guidelines and other methods of treatment in the event of ineffectiveness or contraindications to standard therapy;
E.U20. qualifies the patient for home and hospital treatment;
E.U24. interprets laboratory tests and identifies the causes of deviations;
E.U25. applies nutritional treatment (including enteral and parenteral nutrition);
E.U28. collects material for tests used in laboratory diagnostics;
E.U29. performs basic procedures and medical treatments, including:
a) body temperature measurement, pulse measurement, non-invasive blood pressure measurement,
b) monitoring of vital signs using a cardiomonitor, pulse oximetry,
c) spirometry test, oxygen treatment,
d) intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, cannulation of peripheral veins, collection of peripheral venous blood,
e) taking swabs from the nose, throat and skin,
f) bladder catheterization in women and men, gastric probing, gastric lavage, enema,
g) standard resting electrocardiogram with interpretation, electrical cardioversion and cardiac defibrillation,
h) simple strip tests and blood glucose measurement;
E.U30. assists in carrying out the following procedures and medical treatments:
a) transfusion of blood,
b) drainage of the pleural cavity,
c) puncture of the peritoneal cavity,
d) skin tests,
e) intradermal and scarification tests and interpret their results;
E.U31. interprets pharmaceutical characteristics of medicinal products and critically evaluates advertising materials concerning drugs;
E.U32. plans specialist consultations;
E.U37. recognizes the patient's agony and declares his death;
E.U38. keeps the patient's medical records.
