The seminars are intended to present issues related to the most common diseases of the upper respiratory tract, mouth, throat, ears and neck, including pathophysiology, which will allow for proper understanding of disease processes. Also, the discussed problems related to developmental defects of the upper respiratory tract and ears will allow for a proper understanding of the problem, which will facilitate appropriate management of such cases in the future. A particularly important problem discussed during the seminars is the diagnosis and treatment of cancers in the larynx, nose and paranasal sinuses, nasopharynx, middle and lower throat, oral cavity and salivary glands. A separate issue are aspects related to acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. During the classes, the problems of infections of the nose and sinuses, ears, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, and salivary glands in adults and children, as well as appropriate diagnostic and treatment algorithms, will be broadly presented. With regard to chronic inflammatory diseases affecting the nose and paranasal sinuses, larynx, oral cavity and pharynx, the basic principles of diagnosis and qualification for surgical treatment will be discussed. Various surgical techniques will be presented, from functional surgery that preserves the function of organs to radical procedures that deprive the patient of the basic functions of diseased organs. Much attention will be devoted to issues related to inflammatory complications of sinusitis, highlighting the appropriate approach to the diagnosis of these conditions and appropriate treatment. The seminars also aim to familiarize students with the problems of emergencies such as bleeding, shortness of breath and foreign bodies. Craniofacial injuries and appropriate treatment of the patient. The exercises conducted during the classes are devoted to:
- mastering the skills of collecting patient and family history in diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses, oral cavity and pharynx, larynx, esophagus, trachea and bronchi,
- mastering the technique of examining the nose and paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, trachea and bronchi,
- mastering the ability to independently perform basic procedures concerning ORL organs.
- becoming familiar with modern methods of endoscopic and microsurgical examinations,
- becoming familiar with the care of a patient with tracheostomy and tracheostomy tube replacement,
- becoming familiar with the most common procedures performed and basic surgical methods, with particular emphasis on endoscopic and microsurgical methods, including the use of laser radiation.
- learning about rehabilitation methods for patients after complete removal of the larynx.

U3. Conducts a hearing test using a set of reeds (E.U5)
U4. can perform anterior and posterior rhinoscopy (E.U5)
U5. examines the oral cavity and middle pharynx (E.U5)
U6. performs indirect laryngoscopy (E.U5)
U7. performs palpation of the neck, including lymph nodes and salivary glands (E.U5)
U8. Is able to describe a pure tone audiometry test. Evaluates hearing tests and divides them into conductive and sensorineural hearing loss (E.U5)
U9. lists the types of tests for the patency of the eustachian tubes (E.U5)
U10. Is able to perform basic vestibulospinal tests (Romberg test, Unterberger test, passing test) (E.U9)

Prerequisites
A student starting education in otolaryngology should have knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the head and neck.

Assessment criteria
1. Admission pass - test regarding knowledge in the field of anatomy and physiology of the head and neck >60% (0-20 points)
2. Continuous assessment of current preparation for classes (seminars) in the form of a test regarding individual topics of classes >50% W1 – W30
3. Prolonged observation during practical classes to assess social competences >50% K1-K3
4. Passing the course with a practical test in otolaryngological examination >75% U1-U16
5. Final pass of the course - test exam.
The condition for obtaining a pass is obtaining a result of 60% of positive answers (0-40 points).
The student received a pass for the course, obtaining positive test results and a positive assessment in the field of social competences, which is a condition for taking the final written test.
