Conservation of metals 1402-KM-4L-SJ
The practical exercises conducted within the Metal Artifact Conservation course serve as an application of the knowledge acquired during lectures on this subject, as well as exercises in the Methodology of Metal Artifact Conservation. Students perform conservation or conservation-restoration work on objects that may come from museum collections, private collections, or liturgical items.
An important aspect of the course is the inventory and documentation of objects, which includes a detailed formal description, condition assessment, and the preparation of a conservation treatment plan. Special attention is given to identifying the type of material and manufacturing technique of the artifact, as well as to the identification of corrosion processes, deposits, and the condition of the metal core. As part of the documentation, students also select appropriate photographs for the photographic record.
During practical sessions, students carry out basic conservation treatments, learning to approach each object individually and to solve problems related to its condition. Particular emphasis is placed on corrosion protection methods, stabilization of corrosion processes, and the application of inhibitors. Students also become familiar with proper storage and safeguarding conditions for metal artifacts, which constitute a key element of preventive conservation.
